La piel de los niños entre 4 y 12 años

The skin of children between 4 and 12 years old

Characteristics

The skin is slightly more developed around age 4. However, a child's skin is still thinner and less pigmented than an adult's. Therefore, sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation remains. Only around age 12 does the structure and function of a child's skin match that of an adult.

Skin care

One of your child's most important organs is their skin. Therefore, it's very important to keep it healthy. Your child may suffer from dry skin. You can keep their skin's moisture level balanced by letting your child drink enough water. One child may develop skin irritations more quickly than another. You can't change the level of sensitivity or skin type; the important thing is to take the best possible care of their skin.

  • If your child drools a lot or has runny nose, it may irritate their skin. If so, rub a little avocado spread on their cheeks, chin, and nose.
  • In winter, the air is dry: outside from the cold and inside from the central heating. It's a good idea not to set the heating too high (maximum 20 degrees) and let the water evaporate in a container on the heater. This maintains the humidity level. Even so, your child may have chapped lips and dry skin, which can become flaky and itchy. Regular scrubbing with a mild body cream helps. It's best to apply it after a shower or bath, when the skin is still damp. You can treat chapped cheeks with avocado cream .
  • In summer, excessive heat or warm clothing can cause heat rash, which is visible as small bumps on the reddened skin. You can rub aloe vera gel on them to reduce itching and soothe the redness. Otherwise, leave skin uncovered as much as possible. Be careful in the sun too: your child may suffer from sun allergies. Always use sunscreen with sufficient protection.
  • In the bath: Hot water dries out the skin. Therefore, don't let your child shower or bathe too often or for too long. All our shower gels can be used on children 4 years and older. They are gentle on the skin, neutralize the effects of hard water, and don't dry out the skin. It's best to gently dry your child's delicate skin. It's important that the skin is completely dry before dressing them.
  • Skin rashes with sensitive skin: If your child has sensitive skin, it's best to use only cotton bedding. The skin may react to the detergent you use. Clean the red bottom thoroughly with warm water, rub it with aloe vera gel , and let the skin air dry.

Check your child's skin regularly: if something is wrong, you can detect it early. Look closely for warts, redness, or unusual moles. If your child is itchy or scaly, it could be due to eczema or an allergy. For eczema, Dead Sea salt treatment can significantly improve the condition. Your doctor will usually prescribe a hormonal ointment right away. This quickly eliminates the itching, but it makes the skin thinner and doesn't address the cause. Read more about eczema here.
