Nail care

White spots do not indicate calcium deficiency.

Many people believe that white spots on their nails indicate a calcium or zinc deficiency. This is a myth. White spots are common, completely harmless, and are usually caused by pressure applied to the nails. The spots disappear naturally as they grow out.

Nails are largely composed of keratin.

Both nails and hair are made of keratin, but their composition is different. Foods that are good for your hair are also beneficial for your nails. A varied diet rich in vitamins, proteins, and minerals, along with proper and regular care, are the keys to healthy hair and nails.

Nails must be able to "breathe"

Contrary to what many providers of artificial nails and nail polish claim, it's crucial for nail health to absorb oxygen. When this process is hindered, the nail has a harder time defending itself against infection. Furthermore, nail polish and artificial nails dry out nails and reduce their flexibility and strength.

Stress also affects nails

Chronic stress can disrupt nail growth. Stress and fatigue divert the body's energy and nutrients toward healthy nail and hair growth.

Cuticles have a function

Cuticles allow the skin surrounding the nail to retain moisture and protect against bacteria. Therefore, never remove them! Loose skin can be carefully removed with a cuticle knife to prevent inflammation.

Vertical grooves in the nails

Nail grooves can appear on both fingernails and toenails. They are usually harmless and occur with age due to insufficient moisture, but they can also be a manifestation of an underlying systemic condition or skin disease. If you notice changes in your nails that don't go away on their own, it's best to consult your primary care physician.

Brittle nails have a cause

If you suffer from brittle, split nails, it's often due to a combination of genetics and certain actions. Washing and brushing without gloves, working with paper, and frequent use of disinfectants are the most common causes. To protect your hands and nails, it's best to use a hand and nail cream several times a day. Also, never cut your nails; always file them with a glass or cardboard file. Not from side to side, but in one direction.
